A day in the life of … this Architect in Cleadon Village!

Posted on: February 6th, 2019

My day starts early, I get up at 6.15am. I am a morning person and at my best as the day begins. We, as a family, work as a team to get everyone out to school and sixth form and work and Bruno our dog, walked. Then the working day begins.

As I have my office at home, my commute is extremely quick! I can move from the kitchen into the office in a matter of seconds. It is, however, very separate from the rest of the house. I am very disciplined and don’t tend to carry out any home tasks during my working day. By 8 am, I can be in my office and go through my to do list which I have prepared the day before. I like a to do list, it keeps me on track with the things which must be done to ensure nothing slips through the net.

The radio goes on and I prepare drawings, I like background noise when I am drawing, it helps me focus. However, when I am sat at the computer I must be in silence. I am sure this is to do with the right/left side of the brain processing theory. Wherever I am, Bruno is always at my feet. He is 7 years old and still wants to be close as he did when he was a puppy. He is great company and a good listener when I am puzzling through things!

When the drawings are prepared I head off to the printers, to get the drawings ready for a meeting with the client. I always meet to go through design drawings with my clients. A face to face discussion is essential to ensure everything is covered and thought through.

Then it will be lunchtime and an opportunity to have a bite to eat and walk Bruno, usually in the fields around our home. I find this time good to think and puzzle through the issues of the day and have a different perspective. Bruno enjoys the exercise and the opportunity to meet other dogs too.

After lunch I may carry out a dimensional survey on a client’s property. I carefully draw the layout of the property and then measure every room, window and door opening, ceiling height, roof pitch and level difference, etc. This usually takes a couple of hours depending on the size of the property.

I will then return to the office and answer emails and queries. I have a policy to try to respond to emails within 24 hours of receipt to ensure everything’s stays on track.

On weeknights I often have meetings with clients who work during the day. Early evening is the most convenient time for them to meet. We go through designs and then check the Planning application forms or Building Regulation forms in readiness for submitting an application.

My days are very varied. I love my job and the variety it brings. I enjoy working for myself too. The opportunities to meet new people and work with other professionals and different clients bring lots of job satisfaction.

My day ends with me putting my feet up and often doing some craft. I love embroidery, tapestry, crochet, knitting and needle craft. Being a creative person I always have something on the go! Then its off to bed to sleep before another new day beings …
