10 things I have learnt from 10 years in business …

Posted on: November 7th, 2018

Last month I celebrated 10 years in business. It was a time to reflect and think about the time that has passed. I managed to reduce my musings to 10 thoughts.

1. I enjoy my job … I think you spend so much time in your everyday work that it is really important to enjoy what you do. I feel it is a privilege to work with different clients. To understand their needs and work together with them to deliver the projects they desire.

2. I love the variety of my work … I work on a huge variety of projects, from adaptations for additional needs, house extensions, new build projects, conversions, listed buildings, small commercial projects and building for an elderly parent to come and live independently with family care available.

3. I love working in different areas … I work in many different areas of the North East. I therefore work with many different Planning officers, Conservation Officers and Building Regulation Officers. This experience means that I can cross reference different situations across the different local authorities.

4. I love the variety of my day … every day is different, I might be meeting with contractors and other consultants on site, preparing a sketch design, meeting with Planning officers, preparing a Building Regulation application and going out to tender, meeting a potential client or creating a design following a client brief.

5. Recommendations are important to my business …¬†Many of my commissions come from personal recommendations which has resulted in me covering many areas of the North East over 10 years in business.

“From our first meeting Lynsey was very¬†professional. She explained the process in a clear and friendly manner and kept us informed of each development. We would highly recommend her.”

6. Consistency in level of service is important … I endeavour to ensure all clients receive the same level of service whether the project is large or small.

7. If I look after myself, I look after my clients better … If I do not take time out to recharge my batteries, my energy levels struggle during the week. I know that if I look after myself I am in a better position to help and respond to others.

8. No job is too small … I have looked at many small projects. Some have been projects to create a utility room, a downstairs wc or a home office. I sometimes visit a property where a client thinks they need an extension, but with a little design thought a reconfiguration of the actual property works better. There is far less cost and the result works well.

9. The design process is different each time … sometimes I meet with clients who have very set ideas of what they would like to do. Other people need lots of guidance and for others it is a real hand holding exercise from beginning to end. It is very much up to the individual client.

10. Many clients become friends … Over the past 10 years in business I have made many new friends, this is such a privilege.

Therefore, I am looking forward to what the next 10 years has in store …
