New open space for growing family to use together

The owners of this property, described it as a large house with lots of separate rooms. Their growing family needed a large open space where they could all be together to eat and socialise. They also wanted more natural light. The dining room was never used and the lights were always switched on. The space was used as an enlarged corridor, which no one inhabited, merely passed through to get to the kitchen.

Joining onto this space they had a flat roof conservatory extension which was either too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter. It also had high window cills and therefore when you were sat in the space it was difficult to see out into the garden. They wanted to have more direct connection with their garden.

I redesigned the space following the client brief and working closely with them. They are delighted with the large open space created. We used steel work to remove load bearing walls. They use the space more than any other room in the house. They work, eat, entertain, practice instruments, read and enjoy being together, whilst often simultaneously carrying out different tasks. When i spoke with them, the owners said they spend more time together as a family and their dynamics have changed as a result.

“I just want to thank you again for doing such a fantastic job with our house. I really appreciated working with you to get a design that worked both aesthetically and to suit our family life. The result has really transformed our house and created a light, airy living space that we use constantly. Thank you!” Kate, Durham.

This is wonderful news. It is such a privilege to work with such families and transform the way they live in their properties. Their home now works for them rather than against them.
