Extension to bungalow for elderly parent

I was invited to look at this existing, already extended, bungalow a little while ago. The  home owners needed to create space for their Mum who was elderly and still living in the family home which was on many floors. She needed to have constant accessible care and support, whilst maintaining a space of her own. The home owners and I looked at the property and the various extensions it had and realised none of these spaces were adaptable and therefore an extension was required with an accessible bedroom, shower room, living room and small kitchen space.

Together we designed the spaces to the side and rear of the existing property. This needed to be done sensitively to minimise the impact on the existing property and the garden space which was the focal point of the property to the rear.

I prepared the design and took the project through a Planning application and Building Regulation application. We then went out to tender to contractors and the home owners chose which to use based on cost, their recommendations from previous clients and timescale of when they could start.

The self contained area is accessed from the main house kitchen which needed re-configuring. This new kitchen is light and airy and easily accessible through the new doors directly connecting it to the garden. It is the hub of the property.

The single bedroom is a well lit space with a window to the front of the property and has plenty of space for carers. there is plenty of storage which is essential for downsizing. The shower room has its own velux providing natural light. The small kitchen has everything needed to make your own cup of tea.

From the outside the extension is in keeping with the main property and wraps around the garden. The new living space looks onto the garden to enable Mum to enjoy the changing seasons and the birds who visit. The ramp around the property provides easy access for the wheelchair.

The created extension has followed the brief given by the home owners and her Mum. The home owners are delighted with the work.

‘I cannot praise Lynsey enough for the excellent work she did for us on our extension. When we started we only had a rough idea of what we wanted – a new part of our house where my wife’s mother could live – but Lynsey guided us through every stage of the process, and came up with the perfect solution. She was an invaluable help with the planning application and in finding a reliable local builder. The finished extension is exactly what we needed. I would unhesitatingly recommended Lynsey to anyone, and might also add that she is a very charming and patient person too!‘ Andy and Chris Collins.
